Why Visit Shivanasamudra Falls from Bangalore?
Shivanasamudra Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfall destinations accessible from Bangalore as a day trip. Located on the Cauvery River in Mandya district, the site features two distinct waterfalls — Gaganachukki on the western bank and Barachukki on the eastern bank — separated by the river island of Shivanasamudra. During the monsoon months of July to October, both falls thunder at full force, creating a dramatic spectacle of white water crashing into the rocky gorge below.
The drive from Bangalore is approximately 135 km via Kanakapura Road, making it an ideal one-day trip. The roads are good for most of the route and the scenery through the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary adds to the experience. Saraswathi Car Rentals operates chauffeur-driven cabs for this route with experienced drivers who know the road well.

Gaganachukki vs Barachukki – Know the Difference
Gaganachukki Falls
The taller of the two falls, Gaganachukki drops nearly 90 metres in a single unbroken cascade. The viewpoint is accessible from the west bank via the Shivanasamudra village road. Best viewed from the hilltop vantage point above the gorge. Entry is generally free.
Barachukki Falls
Barachukki is wider and spread across multiple channels over rocky terrain, making it more accessible for visitors. There is a garden and entry point managed by the Karnataka government. Boating is available during the season. Entry fee approximately Rs.20–30 per person.

Combo Destinations – What to Add to Your Trip
Shivanasamudra is ideally located to combine with nearby heritage and nature sites on the same day trip.
Talakadu
Ancient Shiva temples half-buried in sand on the Cauvery banks. Five Panchalinga temples, each dating back over 1,000 years. A deeply spiritual and photogenic stop.
Somnathpur
A perfectly preserved Hoysala temple from the 13th century. UNESCO-listed, with intricate star-shaped platform and detailed stone carvings. Entry fee applies.
Mysore (via extension)
If you want to extend the trip, Mysore is 60 km from Shivanasamudra. Combine palace visit, Chamundi Hill, and Mysore market for a full-day extended circuit.
Sangama
The confluence of Cauvery and Arkavathi rivers at Sangama is a serene spot. River coracle rides available. Often combined with Mekedatu and Shivanasamudra in a single route.
Best Time to Visit Shivanasamudra Falls
The waterfalls at Shivanasamudra are seasonal and directly dependent on monsoon rains filling the Cauvery River.
- July to October (Peak Season): Both Gaganachukki and Barachukki are at full flow. The sight and sound of the cascades during this period is breathtaking. This is the best time to visit.
- November to January: Water levels reduce post-monsoon but falls are still visible. Less crowded, pleasant weather. Good for photography and peaceful visits.
- February to June (Off-Season): Water flow significantly reduced or completely dry by April–May. Not recommended unless combining with Talakadu/Somnathpur heritage stops.
Monsoon caution: During peak monsoon (late July to August), the gorge area below can be dangerous. Stay within the designated viewing areas and do not enter restricted zones near the water edge. The Karnataka Forest Department may restrict access to specific viewpoints during heavy rains.
Travel Tips – Bangalore to Shivanasamudra
- Start early — 6:30 AM departure from Bangalore ensures you reach Gaganachukki by 9:30 AM before crowds build up on weekends.
- Carry cash for entry fees, parking, and boating charges. ATMs are limited near the falls.
- Wear non-slip footwear — rock paths near the falls can be slippery during monsoon.
- If visiting Barachukki, carry light snacks. There are small food stalls nearby but options are limited.
- Avoid weekends during peak monsoon season if you prefer less crowded viewpoints — weekday visits are much quieter.
- Mobile network can be patchy near the falls area. Download offline maps before departure.

Where to Eat Near Shivanasamudra Falls
Food options near the falls are limited — primarily small dhabas and local eateries near Barachukki garden gate and along the Malavalli road. Plan meals around these options or carry packed food from Bangalore.
Local Dhabas at Barachukki Gate
Small roadside eateries serve rice meals, chapati, and South Indian thali near the Barachukki garden entry. Basic but filling. Expect Rs.80–150 per plate. Open during peak season only.
Malavalli Town Restaurants
Malavalli town has proper South Indian restaurants serving idli, dosa, meals and tiffin. Recommended for breakfast on the way or lunch on the return. Cleaner and more reliable than falls-area stalls.
Mysore Road Dhabas (Return Route)
If returning via Mysore Road, multiple highway dhabas between Mandya and Bangalore offer fresh meals, tandoor items, and cold drinks. Good dinner halt on the way back.
Best: Carry Packed Lunch
Most experienced visitors pack lunch from Bangalore or buy from Kanakapura town on the way. This saves time and ensures you have good food during the 2–3 hour exploration of both falls.
